I have known David Lyons for some time now, and I have seen how much his motto— “never quit”—makes all the difference in his journey battling multiple sclerosis (MS). I have been involved in the health and fitness industry, in one way or another, for many years. I have seen many fitness programs, fad diets, quick-results exercise regimens, and hundreds of ways the experts have hit the market with their systems. What I have never seen is a program, such as the OptimalBody HD Training System, the basis for Everyday Health and Fitness with Multiple Sclerosis .

After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), I knew I needed to come to grips with having an incurable disease that wanted to destroy my nervous system and defeat me. However, I was also determined not to let it beat me. I started to envision myself fighting against it. Because I couldn’t find any fitness programs tailored to the specific needs of a person with multiple sclerosis, or any physical limitations for that matter, my training partner, Darren Barnes, and I decided to create that program. After seeing the extraordinary results from my own fitness journey, I decided it was time to share my philosophy with my community of peers, those of us with some form of disability that we need to conquer each day.

Everyday Health and Fitness with Multiple Sclerosis is a step-by-step instructional, educational, and comprehensive guide that, instead of setting unrealistic goals filled with hype, offers realistic advice to achieve a lifestyle of fitness and health despite your limitations.

This is not just a fitness book. In chapter 1 on motivation and inspiration, I share my personal journey before and after being diagnosed with MS, ranging from despair to achievement. The OptimalBody program was designed for all people with specific limitations. Those of us with disabilities, and those who may have other obstacles that limit them in one way or another, will all benefit from this program.

The terms disability and limitation imply that something cannot be done—but that’s not true. Both Darren and I believe, and have proven, that through hard work and proper education, any goal can be attained. Sometimes the path to that goal has to be modified or altered, but, with perseverance, the goal can be accomplished.

Darren and I team up to take you through the phases of this system. It begins with a beginner stage (Phase 1) and advances to intermediate (Phase 2). We make it simple to adapt the training system to your needs and even make working out in a wheelchair possible and effective.

Strong minds and bodies are immensely powerful, and, regardless of our obstacles, we should always try to rise to meet them. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a simple fear of failure. If you can find the courage to fight for your goals, nothing can stop you.

We all go through struggles. When I go through my own personal struggles and my fight to beat MS, I think back to my father, Simon, a survivor of five Holocaust camps, who first instilled in me the beliefs that I still rely on today. For more than five years of his young life, he witnessed torture and death. Nonetheless, he never quit in his belief that he could get past these obstacles and survive, despite their severity. He is now ninety-three years old.

I also relate to my mother who, without a college education, rose to an executive position with American Express in a time when women did not have the opportunities they have today. These were obstacles she was able to overcome through a strong belief in herself and her own abilities.

And then there is my wife, Kendra, who continues to help others as she stands by me in this journey. No matter what is thrown in her path and no matter how many bad days I face with MS, she never quits breaking through the barriers life sets in her way. Therefore, all of us, in one way or another, face major obstacles in our lives. The key to overcome them is to be confident that there is a way to a better and healthier lifestyle. Let this book be your guide to better everyday health and fitness.

David Lyons was a healthy bodybuilder and gym owner when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2006 at the age of 47. The doctors told him he would rapidly decline and require a wheelchair. Instead David battled the disease in the gym and challenged himself by competing in an NPC bodybuilding competition. David and his wife Kendra then founded the MS Fitness Challenge, which provides certified fitness professionals to people with MS nationwide for 12 weeks at no cost as well as a gym membership, in an effort to educate and train them in the benefits of exercise and nutrition. He and Kendra have also launched their own gym, the OptimalBody Personal Fitness facility in Murrieta, CA.
