Book Description

This book is a selection of stories from my childhood in the 60s and early 70s in a small, North West mining and weaving town.

1967 – Wildlife

Although born to the cobbled streets and gas lamps of a mining town, the countryside and all it held was like a drug to me. It ran through my veins. I knew the places to fish and where to see which kind of bird, heralding each visiting summer migrant to our shores and imagining their journeys from distant shores. I took with me no notepad and pencil. They were written on the pages of my heart.

Most of this wisdom had been passed to me by Uncle Jimmy. A man so at one with nature I felt sure he could walk through a field of long grass and leave no tracks! He was my Gandalf – my own private wizard. He taught me how to fish for pike and big perch in the lakes and ponds. He told me the names of all the different types of ducks and waders, and how to identify them by their calls. He explained to me all about the noise that the secretive snipe makes. He called it 'drumming'. He explained that they made the sound by passing air through their feathers. It is a sound that I still find haunting and evocative.
