Introduction

I am the last of the “Horn Singer” family of the Sioux Indian Tribe. I am an elder now. So, I have decided to write down on paper the truth my grandfather “Bend Clown Horse” told me. This way it would not be lost and the story will be told. My ancestors did not write journals or documentaries, this is passed down from father to son from memory. The white-man history books and documentaries told many stories about Crazy Horse, and the Battle of Little Bighorn, but they were not accurate. There are truths that were covered up in order to make the white man look good - but I have the real story. The story from “Thick To North Wind” was never written or documented by any white-man.

I met my great-grandfather “Wind Ghost” when I was a little boy and he was very old. He was a cousin to “Crazy Horse.” They fought together with “Bull Return” against the soldiers in the battle of the Little Bighorn. Bull Return, grandfather of Bend Clown Horse and Wind Ghost, whom is father of Bend Clown Horse, they told him their story. So this will be the true and real story that has never been told or documented before now.

When I was a youth, I lived with my grandfather Bend Clown Horse, and he told me the true story as well. I and my ancestors spoke our old tribal language together. I learned to speak English at boarding and Mission schools on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. This allowed me to translate the stories of my ancestors into English, the same way they told it in Sioux. On the following pages I will tell you the story exactly as it was told to me in my native language as child growing up.

Note: Before the Spaniards and White-man came to the part of Mother Earth known as North America, in the land of the Black Hills, the Tribes that existed there were the Cave People.

I, Thick Clown Horse (Leroy Tyon) am the 13th generation of the Horn Singer Family, as far back as can be remembered.

Relationship of

WIND GHOST and CRAZY HORSE

“Touches the Sky” and “Bull Return” hunted and fought enemy together. The relationship was close between the two. Touches the Sky gave his youngest sister “Creek Mouse” (who was a little girl at the time), to Bull Return. Touches the Sky and his woman, “Weeps By Water” had a baby son and named him “Crazy Horse.” Then many years later Bull Return and Creek Mouse had a baby son and named him “Wind Ghost.” This is how it came to be that Wind Ghost and Crazy Horse became cousins. Another warrior named “Thick to North Wind” was half brother to Bull Return from their father’s side. Thick to North Wind was a great help to Crazy Horse in the Battle of Little Bighorn.
