The Journey Home...

Summer of 2000

In about four miles, I should exit to my right. With the maps directions, I'm now four and a half miles or so from my exit. Exiting from the highway onto the feeder road, I come to a stop sign. After briefly stopping, I turn onto the road to Thumperville. After a half mile on the road, I run over a pothole and things begin to look and feel the same as it did fifty years ago. There were miles of corn on both sides of the road and old houses with collapsed roofs or houses whose roofs look like old sway back horses. I remember when I was a kid sitting in the back seat looking at the power lines; how they rolled from pole to pole, just rolling with the Texas hills, up and down like a roller coaster. I would sit deep in thought for some reason just staring at those power lines every time we hit the road. Sitting at the stop sign at the edge of town, I can see that I have arrived at my destination, Thumperville. After I park the car, I get out and stretched, and then took a look around at what seems to be a time capsule; The old two tank Service station but now with no attendant, Doc. Jacobs pharmacy across the street or what used to be his pharmacy, Hadley's farming and feed store, Dailey's Grocer, a paint and body shop that used to be Silva's Garage, The city's police department, the city council building, and at the end of the road the fire department next to the corn field. I laugh and shake my head thinking, "I wonder if any of the firemen have problems getting any sleep lying awake at night wondering who's in the cornfield?" ...
