“Who’s up for a game of Ouija?” Immediately her eyes met mine, and I knew her question was directed towards me. Every time we played with the board, I would go into a trance and ghosts would appear. Of course, I was the only one who could see these spirits, but Cassie loved it just the same. She obsessively talked me into playing the game in hopes that she would see her nanna. We hadn’t seen her yet, but that didn’t cease her infatuation.

“Sure…I’m in.” Cassie ignored the hesitation in my voice; she knew I would do it. I tried to keep my charade up and pretend to be excited, but I wasn’t. Cassie’s obsession was starting to wear on me and, more importantly, on our friendship.

Recently, I had begun to feel a little leery about the Ouija board. What if my parents tried to communicate with me? What would I say? I didn’t want to lose it and start crying in front of my friends. In addition to my personal insecurities, it also seemed like someone was watching me. Not just anyone, but a ghost. A dark, sinister being that didn’t want to just drop in for a simple “hello.” Playing with the board was a way for evil spirits to escape from their imprisonment on the other side. Communicating with the dead was one thing, being their accomplice during their breakout from purgatory was another. My senses were on high alert as my skin broke out in goosebumps. Impulsively, I shot a look over my shoulder, half expecting to see a monster lurking behind me.

Thank God, Matt wasn’t interested. He stood at the pool table tapping the cue on the edge, “That’s lame. Let’s play a real game instead.” He racked up the classic 8 ball and took a shot. His perfect formation allowed the ball to rocket across the table and drop into the left corner pocket.

“You can play with your balls later, Matt.” Cassie mimicked while making an obscene gesture towards her crotch.

Matt slowly put the pool stick down and rolled his eyes. “Bite me, Cassie, I’ll play with my balls whenever I want!”

Ignoring Matt’s attempt to sidetrack Cassie, she remained determined. “Are we gonna do this or what?” I knew something weird could happen if I continued to play with the board. A chill shot through my body and made me shudder. My arms and shoulders shook visibly like a cold wind had blown through the room, without disturbing anyone or anything other than me.

Cassie must have noticed because she turned her sarcasm to me. “What, you gotta pee or something?”

I shrugged and looked at the board. “Well let’s do it if you’re so serious about it.” I was still afraid to put my hands on it, but I hid my real feelings behind my mask of confidence. I didn’t know what could happen, but every part of me was reluctant to play with that board. If it could’ve talked, I’m sure it would have forcefully instructed me to “back away slowly.”
