Sample Chapter

On a small island by the sea lived a little girl who hated her kinky, curly hair. The little girl had the tightest kinky curls you did ever want to see, so much so they called her KenKay. KenKay spent most of her day sitting on her porch daydreaming about having long ponytails like the girls in her neighborhood and class. They were very mean to KenKay and made fun of her tightly coiled, kinky, curly hair. She thought if she had her hair straightened like the other girls, she would be accepted into their world. She felt alone in her world of kinky curls. When KenKay would ask her father about getting her hair straightened, he would simply reply, "God made you special and gave you those kinky curls to prove how wonderful you are."

Well, I don’t I feel wonderful, KenKay thought.

KenKay dreaded going to school because her hair made her feel out of place. The other girls wore their long, straight hair in ponytails and bows, and their hair reached well below their shoulders, but not KenKay. Her hair grew up and out. KenKay watched the other girls’ hair float with each movement of their head. Sadness seemed to fill her heart daily because she just wanted to have what the other girls had: straight hair. Even her teacher’s hair seemed to dance with the wind. KenKay’s hair stood strong and unmovable. Not a characteristic KenKay favored in her hair.

Kandra Ferguson

Natural hair therapist/educator and salon owner with a masters degree in psychology. I have been doing hair since I was knee high to a grasshopper. My life took roads that seem to lead me away from hair, but eventually I found my way back to my first love. My love for hair has taken me beyond superficial aspects of hair i.e. styling and installation. I crave an in-depth understanding of the why's of hair. This craving allowed me the opportunity to utilize my degree in understanding the psychology behind hair, which lead me to understanding the pains women and children experience when it comes to issues of their hair. I wanting to share what I have learned lead me to creating the Hair I Am children's book series.
