Blessed with financial comfort, my husband and I were poor stewards of what God sent our way. The recession hit, and we lost it all. No one to blame but ourselves. One year prior, I had taken a Christian Finance course and made some changes. If not for that, we would have been counted among those in foreclosure and property repossession. After wallowing in self-pity and depression for a while, the Lord showed me Romans 13:8, "Owe no man any debt but love." This book is a 40 day compilation of that insight.
Earn before you Spend.
The Bible has much to say about business, and one of my favorite Bible on Business verses is found in
Good News Translation (GNT)
27 Don't build your house and establish a home until your fields are ready, and you are sure that you can earn a living.
Some buy the house then try to figure out how they will pay the mortgage. Global record breaking foreclosure rates are the result of that trend of the 2006-2008 era.
Our income provides us with a certain quality of life experience; however, some spend more than they earn so they can live a pretentious lifestyle funded by debt.
During my time as an active Real Estate Broker, this verse became foundational as I went about helping families find a home. This verse clearly substantiates the fact that a person should be able to AFFORD the house they intend to buy. Realistically however, society encourages people to live above their means and facilitates this with loans and lifestyle messages pushing people to select houses with mortgage expenses exceeding 30% of their monthly income.
A home is one of the icons of accomplishment and the nicer the house, the nicer the neighborhood, the nicer the furnishings - the higher society ranks a family’s standing within that social group. Therefore, to remain within Biblical guidelines, a person should first work on building their income to the place where they can afford the house of their dreams BEFORE buying the house of their dreams.
Are you living within your means? Better yet, are you living below your means so you can save for that dream home? If you want to do it the Biblical way, there is no other way to go.
