Lunch is in full swing. The teenage girls, sitting at the long table, are busy talking. Their voices and their laughter are like bells, like notes on a grand piano. Light and melodious, they float in the thick air surrounding us, as does the repressive unknown in our present existence. We have been living on Belgicka Ulice, in Praha, Czechoslovakia, since May. It is near the Museum of Decorative Art, a large church, and the Univerzita Karlova. I know my friends are trying to forget, but deep down inside our hearts, there is an unfathomable and immeasurable deep hole in all of us. Personally, I cannot ignore this void; I am submersed in thoughts, troubled by memories and the hope of answers that have been too long to come. I yearn for my mother’s arm, my brother's soft cheeks, our laughter and closeness. Daily, we go to a center where thousands of names are listed with hope to repeal our fate. Anxiously, we read through the long lists. We are so hopeful and yet so afraid of what we may find. Our faces give nothing away, but we are shaking inside. The light laughter and stories are just there to cover the horrible feelings we carry within. "Anita?" I am awakened from my deep thoughts. “Anita!” Mrs. Liron is standing at the door, dressed in her neatly cut gray suit. Beside me, Ruth is telling a story to Ilse and Eva about what happened yesterday. She went to a job interview, and is recounting the experience in lively detail from the clothes she wore to the particulars of each event that followed; how she was scrutinized by a gentleman with thick glasses, interrogated by another and eventually sent out without a job. "Anita Pollakova?" The lady repeats. I gulp another spoonful of the soup, and then another. There is no way I am going to sacrifice a drop of food to speak to anyone. Finally, I rise slowly from my chair. My cap, resting on the bench, falls to the ground. I had a haircut a few months ago, and I like wearing the cap to keep warm. It is now December, and winter is definitively with us. First, I pick up my hat, and then start to walk slowly toward the large wood door that separates us from the rest of the world. The women is still standing, her eyes are hard. She seems to look right through me, or what is left of me. "Yes, I am here." I reply. She motions for me to follow her. We walk through tiled hallways and enter her office. The room is neat. A picture of her children sits on the desk. They all wear big smiles and neat clothes, just like the picture my parents had done of my brother and me when we were little.
