Running can be a method of discovering new physical, mental, and emotional limits. Seeking a new way to test those limits, Ryan Chukuske set off on a 100 mile race. During the race, he discovered a new appreciation for himself and for life in general. This is a recollection of his thoughts during the race and how running can be translated to lessons anyone can live by. Finding change through pain and humility, and a touch of humor, he discovered that life is not about the running. Life is about the journey.
Mile 1: On Your Mark
The first mile makes me laugh. A hundred of us crazy fools march off for what will inevitably be an experience of pain, humility, and change. Pain is obvious. Running 100 miles is going to hurt. It is going to hurt a lot. The pain cuts deeper than the physical ailments. It is mentally painful as well. Knowing the pain will come does not make it easier to handle so I tell myself, “Pain is love and love is pain.” Not quite the mantra I need at the moment, but it will do.
Humility can be a hard pill to swallow. We strive for accomplishments and recognition. Often times, we do things to receive praise from others. True humility is recognizing our own limitations. It is doing things not for the sake of others noticing, but to discover one’s self. Running 100 miles is my way of doing this. This journey is not about being better than the people around me. This is about discovering a new part of me and understanding just how truly human I am.
The change is a result of the pain and humility. Each mile will bring something new. Each mile will take me to somewhere I have never been. I will never be the same and that excites me and scares the hell out of me. Each of us has our own 100 miles to live through. It presents itself in different ways to different people. For me, it is running. But it’s not about the running. It’s about the journey.
