On the evening of August 25, 2001, at 6:45 pm, Aaliyah and several members of the record company boarded a small plane at Marsh Harbour Bahamas, to travel to the airport in Opa-locka, Florida. The flight originally was booked for the following day, but they finished early with filming. Aaliyah and her entourage decide to return to the US immediately and do not wait for one more day. The designated airplane was much smaller than the plane in which they had originally flown. The whole party and all of the equipment were on board. As a result, the aircraft was over its maximum takeoff weight, when departed.

The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, about 200 feet (60 m) from the runway. All passengers on board were killed.

According to findings by the coroner's office, Aaliyah suffered from "severe burns and a blow to the head", in addition to severe shock and a weak heart.

Aaliyah's funeral was held a week later on August 31, at the Saint Ignatius Loyola Church in New York. Her body lies in a silver casket, which was carried in a glass hearse and was drawn by horse. About 800 mourners attend the procession. After the service, 22 white doves were released to symbolize each year of Aaliyah's life. She was interred in a crypt in a private room in the Rosewood Mausoleum at the Ferncliff Cemetery.
