The Whitfield’s ballroom was packed.  Alasdair pulled at his cravat to relieve the stifling heat of crushed bodies and heavy perfumes that permeated the air.  He was looking around for familiar faces when the breath from his lungs exploded.

There sitting amongst other debutantes was Miranda.  It had been four years since he had seen her, but he could never forget her face. It was Miranda, he knew her face, it had been burned into his memory from their one small moment in time together.  Since that day, she would creep up unrepentantly in his dreams at night and he would think about her for days afterward.

Alasdair stole a glance over the debutants seating.   Miranda was sitting quietly against the wall, trying to appear as unobtrusive as possible, listening to something the plump girl next to her was saying while smiling warmly.  He could not believe it, but she had grown more beautiful since he had last seen her. His heart picked up pace at the thought of speaking to her again.

Looking around the room to see if anyone could hear his rapidly pounding heart, he noticed that he was not the only man in the room watching her with longing on his face.  She was glorious, even in her plain yellow gown and apparent disinterest in the other gentlemen present.  Her blonde hair shown with golden highlights, her petite body curved in all the right places announcing that she was truly a woman any man would be happy to have under him and beside him.  Alasdair gave the other men a predatory smile, they could not approach Miranda without an introduction and he knew that Lady Josephine would be reluctant to give one.  Lucky for him, they had already been introduced.   With the confidence born of many generations of Moorcroft victories Alasdair began the hunt for a ladies hand.
