Dale German was born in 1932, and grew up in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from North High School, where he met and subsequently married the love of his life, Wilma Zongker. Dale studied chemistry, with a minor in physics, at Wichita University. He moved to Ames, Iowa with his young wife for graduate school. While in school there, he also worked for the Atomic Energy Commission. Illness brought on by exhaustion halted his pursuit of a doctorate degree in Chemistry, and he moved back to Wichita. His family was growing: he had a young son, Alan, and his wife was pregnant with daughter, Pam.
